carbonfund.orgAmtrakSome of you may know that Amtrak offers its passengers the choice to offset the carbon associated with train travel.

For an upcoming trip to New York I was offered the opportunity to pay $.40 to offset .04 tons of CO2 through arrangements with Carbonfund.org.

I could choose between a basket of renewable energy production, or specify: Renewable Energy & Methane; Energy Efficiency & Carbon Credits; Reforestation and Avoided Deforestation; and, ACREE Red + Forestry Projects [saving Brazilian Amazonian forests] .

According to a couple of online carbon footprint calculators, using my 6-cylinder 2007 sedan for the same trip would generate .09–.11 tons of CO2.

United Airlines, for one, helps you get on board with its air travel carbon offset program.  See here.

(Oh for the chance for Mighty Vehicle (Suburban’s, Tahoe’s, etc.) owners to purchase carbon offsets when driving 12-20,000 mi./yr. with no passengers.)
