Upcoming Sustainable Gardens Event in Annapolis
The following was announced in The Capital yesterday, March 18th:
“Garden enthusiasts, environmentalists, educators, greening organization, nonprofit organizations, community lovers, nature photographers, area planners and residents are invited to attend an event sponsored by Unity Gardens on Marcy 2 at The Key School, 534 Hillsmere Drive.
Registration is at 10 a.m. and the presentation by author Rick Darke beings at 11 a.m.
Darke will discuss “Balancing Natives and Exotics in the Garden,” drawing from horticultural science, contemporary ecology and modern resource management studies to describe a balanced ethic for beautiful, functional, sustainable garden design.
His books will be available for purchase at this event and can also be ordered in advance for pickup at the event during the registration process.

Incidentally, as per its website, Unity Gardens makes grants, awarding up to $1,000 for community greening projects. Qualified non profit groups include churches, schools and community organizations. Project eligibility is according to:
• A demonstrated level of volunteer participation and leadership.
• A potential benefit for the community and environment.
• A feasible plan including goals, site selection and a time line.
• A detailed budget, proof of fiscal responsibility and financial need.
• A long term plan for maintenance and sustainability.
