River Gardens to Help Restore the Magothy

The article’s accompanying picture is captioned: “Environmental activists work on a floating garden of natural river grasses. The Magothy River Association is planning a workshop to teach waterfront residents how to build the floats and attract marine life.”

I’m guessing there are several St. Margaret’s parishioners who live at the edge of the Magothy and have piers. As it’s suggested that these floating gardens are simple enough to be built in backyards, perhaps one of the youth groups would like to work with the waterfront resident in constructing one? Such an effort might include a YouTube video of the process. What a prize that would be! (Parishioner scouts participating might earn a merit badge?)

According to staff writer Tim Prudente, stretches of the Magothy today are “lifeless. The aquatic forests have vanished. Runoff clouds the water and chokes life.”

Too, the “Broadneck Patch” reported on the State of the Magothy 2012 meeting where Dr. Peter Bergstrom, a biologist with NOAA’s Chesapeake BayOffice, presented his most recent annual findings. Here’s the link to the Patch piece.
